OUR PRINCIPLES

“Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need. Advocates and advocacy schemes work in partnership with people they support and take their side. Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice.”
The Advocacy Charter 2002

Advocacy In Barnet adheres to the principles of the Advocacy Charter and ensures that all our advocates are fully trained and CRB checked before meeting and working with members of the public.

Independence
Advocates are completely independent from any service providers.

Empowerment
The advocates’ role is to support the service users to make your own
choices and do not offer solutions or advice.

Confidentiality
Advocates will not discuss confidential matters with third parties unless
you have given them written permission to do so.

Loyalty
Advocates represent your views; they will not represent the views of
professional workers or your family without your express wishes.

Equal Rights
Empowerment means that advocates will follow your wishes even if they disagree with your course of action. Advocates support your right to make your own decisions.

Safety and Risk
Advocacy In Barnet works to ensure that no advocate will be put at risk by carrying out their duties. All advocates are police checked and have had references followed up before being able to work with service users.
