ADVOCACY IN BARNET HAS HELPED PEOPLE LIKE THESE
Nadim lives in a residential home. He is sight impaired and is frustrated about not being able to read books. He was feeling lonely and wanted to meet other people to keep his mind active. His Advocate found out about a cassette library and the Housebound Reader Service and arranged for his keyworker to obtain resources for Nadim. Nadim is now going to a book group in his local library and attending a discussion group in the community centre.
Jimmy has a learning disability and lives at home with his parents. He is very sociable and enjoys going to college to do a skills for life course. He is also on a work experience programme working in a supermarket and hopes to get a job there when he finishes college. Jimmy wanted to live independently and his parents didn’t think he could cope. Jimmy’s social worker contacted us and now Jimmy has an Advocate to support him to put his point of view across. Jimmy’s parents are now supporting his choice to live independently although they are still a bit anxious but they will be able to visit him regularly.
Gita lives alone. Her children and grandchildren have all moved out of the area and visit occasionally. Gita is becoming more and more frail and needs help around the home and with shopping. She also needs support with personal care. Her family are putting pressure on Gita to move closer to them and into a residential home. Gita doesn’t want to leave the area or her friends. Her Advocate arranged for her to have a care assessment and Gita now has a carer who helps her for an hour a day. Gita also has the support of a volunteer who helps her with her shopping and she now has a cleaner to help her keep her home tidy. |
